AI awarded Nobel prizes - twice

AI has been credited as the key for the Nobel prizes for both Physics and Chemistry this month (October 2024).

Chemistry

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to David Baker for his work in computational protein design, and to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper from DeepMind for developing AlphaFold2, an AI model that predicts protein structures. Their contributions significantly enhance biotechnological and medical research, enabling new protein designs and better understanding of biological processes. This showcases AI's transformative role in addressing complex scientific challenges. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistry/2024/press-release/

Physics

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their foundational work in machine learning through artificial neural networks. Hopfield developed a network capable of pattern recognition using physics principles, while Hinton advanced techniques for data classification. Their innovations have significantly impacted various fields, including physics, by enhancing material development and fostering the growth of AI technologies. This award underscores the importance of interdisciplinary research in driving technological progress.
